Ayckbourn’s Conquests

When you’re watching a play, do you ever wonder where the characters go when they leave the room? Alan Ayckbourn’s trilogy “The Norman Conquests” answers this question; each play in the series shows the same six characters in a different room of the house during the same unhappy weekend. Although the plays are self-contained and each can stand alone, I defy you to see one without wanting (no, needing) to see the other two. The revival at Circle in the Square has come with cast of six intact from a sold-out run at Old Vic in London, and you’d have to look for a long time to find a tighter ensemble of theatrical excellence. The characters might be unhappy, but the audience was delighted and the laughter continuous. You can see all three plays on a Saturday theater binge — or spread it out over separate nights; whichever you choose, don’t miss it. Not interested in theater? Go anyway!

We got our first ticket at the TKTS booth and there was a special deal at the theater of $49 each for the remaining two shows; not bad for the smartest, funniest show to hit Broadway for years.
