Chadwick Tyler in the Works of a New Oversized Monograph

On the heels of his internationally acclaimed Tiberius exhibition, high-profile commercial work for Alexander Wang, Levi’s and Marc Jacobs, and editorial contributions to Vogue Turkey, AnOther Magazine, Grey, Dazed & Confused, Dossier and V Magazine, photographer Chadwick Tyler is in the midst of his first art book, which will document the coming of age of five captivating young women in the modeling industry over the forthcoming year. The oversized monograph (projected for publication in fall 2012) will unravel the singular charm, humanity and unembellished reality of the girls’ interior lives, focusing on their evolution in a milieu more attuned to serving the interests of designers, agents and editors than cultivating models’ personalities and psyches.

Credited with having launched the careers of sought-after models such as Ashley Smith, Hailey Clauson, Siri Tollerød, Anais Pouliot and Mathilde Frachon, Chadwick’s powerfully evocative imagery—unmistakable for its portrayal of women yearning for a release from the mundane—will surely have a similar effect on this fresh crop of models, who will be memorialized throughout such a pivotal point in their paths, all whilst engaged in an intermittently harsh industry. Here, Chadwick shares the catalyst for and purpose behind the project.

Julia Frakes: Your meticulous casting process has spurred the careers of some of today’s most in-demand girls, forecasting their “icon” status. What in particular do you scout out? Which qualities do you think are most indicative of future stars?

Chadwick Tyler: I think it comes down to knowing women, being able to see something before it becomes obvious. I guess it’s like how a jeweler would look at a raw stone.

Julia: What is your main intent for publishing the book?

Chadwick: Not to fuck it up. My second intent is to see where this project takes us.

Julia: In the dawn of their careers, Kate Moss, Guinevere van Seenus, Helena Christiansen and Natalia Vodianova were all intimately shot prior to achieving industry stardom—or, arguably, before being spoilt by the realities of adulthood. Why do you think their earliest forays—which documented their maturation and shed light on their core personalities—endeared us to their identities and led us to relish in their professional successes?

Chadwick: Well, I think there is a longing at that point in one’s life—exploration into finding oneself.

Julia: So, can you tell us about the five girls slated to be intimately chronicled over the next year, throughout their coming of age?

Chadwick: I am not ready to discuss names and I still have a few girls that I am looking at. The ones that I have already started working with are incredible; they have already exceeded my expectations.

Julia: How do you think your work has evolved since the celebrated Tiberius exhibition?

Chadwick: Maybe in the fact that I am looking for more rawness and realness in my images. I think with Tiberius there was a character the girls could adapt.

Julia: A major ‘mazel tov’ is in order, as 2011 marks your alliance with Marek & Associates; how do you foresee their representation impacting your career?

Chadwick: I think it will allow me to focus on what I do: take pictures. Marek is a legend in this business and I have some big shoes to fill.

The Future of the City Interviews

The Future of the City: this is the motto of the carmaker, Smart, and the six New York City magazines who have joined forces to design “great things” – in the literal sense of the word. Take a look behind the scenes and hear what the artists themselves have to say about the project. The murals will be on display for another month, including the Dossier mural designed by Josh Slater which can be seen on Spring between Lafayette and Crosby.

During the hustle and bustle of fashion week, Homecoming was an amazing five day pop-up event that offered the creative community of downtown New York a place to call home. COACD X PUMA X DOSSIER

On Thursday, Dossier played in the COACD soccer tournament at South Street Seaport with a lineup that included teams from Bloomingdales, Oak, Milk Studios, Lil Frankies, ThreeNYC, Red Bucket Films and East Village Radio and a live performance by Jailbait. We lost to East Village Radio who went on to the finals and was beat by good old Bloomies. The whole gig was sponsored by PumaCity which has more fun events going on this month related to soccer, drinking and dancing in the middle of the day. Thanks to our team for coming out.
