I am not sure that it can be done, but I will attempt to describe the experience precipitated by Doug Wheeler’s installation SA MI 75 DZ NY 12 (2012). Through the use of something—fiberglass and lights—Doug has created nothing, or perhaps everything, as the exhibition is often referred to as the Infinity Room. There is nothing to touch, little to hear, no smells or tastes and, in the face of near-blinding whiteness or darkness, no sight.

It is astounding what complete absence does for one’s sense of presence. The viewer becomes painfully aware of others in the “room,” standing in a sort of Waiting for Godot formation and stuck in shared awe. The color and texture of clothing and skin overwhelms. The mind is taxed by stimulation. It searches for corners, sides, parameters and familiarities, and an end.

Somehow it is appropriate that the installation’s only true comparison can be found in nature. There are caverns accessible by tunnels at a steep incline that fall beyond the reach of natural light and ambient noise. I have been inside one of these. Once on the cave floor, my ears rung and my vision filled with colored shapes. As if a projector had turned on, images appeared against the black. I looked down and saw the color of my harness, which was red in reality but yellow in my mind. Sensory deprivation, many people will tell you, is hallucinogenic. There is no uncertainty, no void that the mind does not attempt to reconcile and fill.

If you are in LA this weekend, please stop by The Pulse Art Fair and say hi to us. Dossier is pleased to be participating by curating a video series exclusively for Pulse titled Industry of Fetish that centers around the fetishization of celebrity culture in Los Angeles featuring artists Rafael Rozendaal, Carabello/Farman and Rex Bruce. For this installation we worked with Elizabeth Kabler of Skylight Projects, who is also at Pulse exhibiting work by the ever diverse Alex Massouras in a section called Impulse that displays work by a singular artist. In addition, Grey Area is also here with a tent full of fun stuff and a concrete ping pong table to boot. And, still assuming that you are in LA and you like art, then you would want to check out all of the other events going on including the Getty’s massive citywide Pacific Standard Time, a big art initiative focused on the art scene in sunny Los Angeles. There’s also Art Platform at LA Mart and Fountain Fair. A helpful tool to navigate all of this is LA-based Fabrik Magazine’s Art Conceirge App for your Iphone with a handy guide to all of the fairs, parties and other stuff and things.

Smartcar recently asked six magazines to visually answer the question: “What is your vision of the city of the future?” Dossier, Zink, Nylon, Theme and Pin-Up were all asked to participate. The results are displayed on Colossal Media billboards throughout the city and Brooklyn. Our collaboration with artist Josh Slater is up on Spring and Lafayette. Below is a video with a little behind the scenes footage of painting billboards across the city. We are super proud to be a part of this. All cars should be smart. The city of the future definitely doesn’t have any stupid cars.

This Friday, June 4th, we’re co-hosting a preview party for the Exit Art Ecstasy Benefit Auction. Proceeds from the auction—which includes artists like the recently deceased, forever impressive Louise Bourgeois, Alfredo Jaar, Yoko Ono and Swoon—go to support new, adventurous voices who explore and articulate contemporary history: social, political and everything in between. It seems completely crazy to us, but the fourth issue of Dossier is at the printer right now and will be coming out in less than three weeks. As usual, we have a mix of disparate people involved in interesting ways, from an interview with Miranda July, accompanied by her sketches, to portraits of Alia Shawkat by Poppy de Villeneuve, to poetry by Pulitzer Prize winner Yusef Komunyakaa. As for fashion, we have a big upstate party shot by Dan Martensen and styled by Kate Lanphear, an Anais Nin inspired story shot by Thomas Schenk and styled by Joanne Blades, and the lovely new face, Katie Foggerty, shot by Maciek Kobielski and styled by Keegan Singh. And there is, as always, much more.

You can pre-order a copy of the new issue through us, and it will arrive in an envelope chez vous in time for fashion week (let’s say London fashion week to be safe, but it might be there in time for New York). Otherwise keep your eyes open for it on newsstands in the coming weeks.
