Each Friday, Dossier brings you knowledgeable style commentary, context and inspiration — a roundup of the week’s best style coverage — in no particular order.
1. As winter coats and frigid temperatures encourage wardrobe apathy, the Sartorialist motivates us by featuring cold weather vogue, Italian-style. Skip the opening Parisian shot and move on to the gold buttons and greatness of classic Florentine and Milanese fashion with inspiring avant-garde leanings.
2. Tuesday’s historic inauguration was significant in innumerable ways. Here, Cathy Horyn pays homage to one of them: Michelle Obama’s wardrobe. Finally a reflection on the first lady’s style that I can get behind, it’s contextual, insightful and considers the importance of the brilliant woman wearing the clothes, not just her fashion moment.
3. New York City can be a fickle mistress, picking you up and throwing you down in the same moment. To recover the love after those latter moments, I recommend this photo essay by Ian Gittler. Championing the city in the way that only a true New Yorker can, it captures the disparate cultures that give the Big Apple its inimitable style.
4. The general dispatch coming out of the Milan is that Winter 2009/10 menswear is all about understated simplicity. Perhaps designers are riding the coattails of a new American president who mirrors his integrity with a somber, suave style, or maybe the temperance has something to do with that worldwide economic crisis I keep hearing so much about. Whatever the reason, leave it to Ms. Menkes to get to the bottom of it in this insightful review of the Italian shows.
5. In case (like me) you forgot about the exclusive T Style online film series “Brooklyn 09”, which I called to your attention a couple of weeks ago, I’m taking this moment to remind you to tune in. Its fragmented yet connected vignettes featuring interpersonal relationships posses a strain of universality that somehow provides life’s complications with a refreshing touch of perspective.
