Coiffe inspirations Marianne Faithfull and Stevie Nicks.
In a certain sense, style is all about a good hair day. No matter how outrageous an outfit and its accoutrements, chances are you won’t feel fabulous unless you are having one. However, finding an artist who can actually cut hair (all types), style it tastefully and color it so adeptly that it looks like you were born with that gorgeous hue—meaning no grow-out roots—is a difficult to impossible task. Or it was until L’Atelier de Laurie.
L’Atelier is nestled on a quaint New York East Village street, a refreshing departure from the city’s many machine-like salons. Packed with beautiful antiques (many of which owner Laurie Foley picked up in France) and laced with top-of-the-line products, it feels like a picturesque Paris block and makes you feel right at home.
The amazing cuts seen on everyone coming out of L’Atelier are a result of Laurie’s unique scissor technique, undivided attention and a special non-damaging blade used to create just the right shape for individuals’ features and hair—no matter the texture. Take as evidence this curly girl, who has been able to rock an awesome Marianne Faithfull haircut, including her famous bangs and sideburns, and seamlessly grow it into a more modern Stevie Nicks coiffe, but slicker.
The no-roots thing is a result of Laurie actually painting strands of hair, paying attention to every shadow and crevice in order to create highlights that appear to be the result of a month spent in the Caribbean. Not only does she produce perfect sun-streaked hair, she also does a palette of hues that includes her own subdued but fiery red. A true artist, she has a vision first and then literally takes as much time as she needs to get it just right.
If my first hand experience isn’t enough, Laurie’s high-fashion credentials attest to her magic touch. Working in equal parts backstage and in her cozy shop, she’s the mastermind behind both Gwyneth Paltrow and Agyness Deyn’s blond and model Vlada Roslyakova’s rouge—to name just a few.
Oh, and be sure to give Mac the dog a pet on your way out.
