I came across this image of Swat Valley, Pakistan a couple weeks ago in the New York Times and it has haunted me since. Beyond an admirable chance color composition, the photo expresses an engaging humanity. Even with their backs turned and most of their bodies covered, each girl’s colored wrap distinguishes her, demonstrating the alchemy of clothing and individuality. As stated by one of my all-time favorite Renaissance men, Jean Cocteau, “Style is a simple way of saying complicated things.”
