For his soccer-inspired S/S10 collection for Y-3, Yohji Yamamoto transformed the Park Avenue Armory into a World Cup stadium, even preceding the show with The Star Spangled Banner, which caused the crowd to erupt into cheers. The show was definitely worth the fuss: aside from the brand’s signature sporty graphic black-and-white spin on Yamamoto’s designs, hot pink, tomato red and blazing orange appeared for women along with an array of plaid, beige and olive for men. Innovative uses of netting, slouchy drop-crotch pants for women and a flowing long shorts (nearly a skort) for both men and women were some additional highlights in this bright, uplifting collection. This was the first show where audience members began to clap and cheer loudly before the finale, as a large white net dropped from the ceiling and one lucky photographer from the pit was chosen to be the goalie as models, led by a spirited Irina Lazareanu, took turns kicking balls into the net. Yamamoto then plucked soccer star Zinedine Zidane from the audience to assist him. And the crowd went wild…
