The Core of Dior

In the same way that Gucci’s ’90s resurgence is inextricably linked to Tom Ford’s highly sexed styles, Dior Homme remains synonymous with creator Hedi Slimane’s slim cuts and street sensibility—so revolutionary that they inspired Karl Lagerfeld to completely reformulate his physique. Now, two years after Slimane’s departure, the collection continues to hold a cult following, whose love of the modern classics is reflected in the brand’s latest project: 10 Essential Elements for the Ideal Wardrobe. As its name indicates, for the next ten months Dior will introduce its core menswear pieces, one per month, starting with Dior Homme Denim. Made in Japan, the jeans come in three cuts (super skinny, skinny and straight leg) and more than 20 washes, and are so loved that there are websites dedicated to their particularities and signature back-pocket scarring. So while the selections represent Slimane’s best, they also remind Homme lovers that while one master has left the building, another—current head designer and former Slimane assistant Kris Van Assche—remains.
