THECAST

Tucked beneath New York’s Ludlow Street on the Lower East Side is one of my favorite creative havens, the THECAST. The hybrid shop/studio is the conception of Chuck Guarino and Ryan Turner, who not only look like rock stars (in the Mick Jagger or Jim Morrison, not Jonas Brothers way) but also create concert-worthy clothing.

While the store communicates a certain rebelliousness, the duo’s story is actually quite wholesome. Chuck and Ryan met while surfing in California as teens, stayed friends, moved to New York and started making t-shirts, which then turned into, well, all of this.

Currently the basement space is filled with THECAST offerings, art from a recently hosted show, and found skulls, candles, accessories and vintage boots, which reside harmoniously next to the cowhide leather jackets they’ve created for fall. Heavy only on quality, these jackets can also be worn as vests, as sleeves zip conveniently off. On another rack, dark denim jeans hang with cut-off vests, which feature various signature prints and are backed with soft lamb leather. Pieces from seasons’ past—including plaid button-downs and lined leather jackets—sit next to super soft shirts with hard designs.

While a trip to the store is highly recommended, the line can also be found at Barney’s Tokyo, Confederacy in Los Angeles and Holt Renfrew in Canada—to name just a few. And yes, it’s menswear but girls needn’t feel excluded; I tried on a jacket and fell in love and I know a gal who buys their jeans. THECAST’s wears may be raw, but they are tailored to fit like a glove.
