It has been argued by a number of people I respect, designers included, that the desire and ability to adorn our bodies and assert our individuality is what differentiates us from animals. In a broader sense, it is the idea explored in the PBS documentary How Art Made the World. Pondering this notion, I perused National Geographic and was astounded by the disparate ways in which—even in an era defined by globalization—we interpret this instinct, reminding me that though fashion in the Western world can sometimes appear repetitive, the limit of human creativity in terms of embellishment is, in fact, infinite.
