Somehow in the heart of SoHo, in the middle of Fashion Week, Steven Alan showed me not only a shimmering glimpse of what I hope to wear in spring but also how I hope the season will look, smell, sound and taste. There was no runway, not a thump of heavy bass, nary a spotlight in sight. Rather, a very Steven Alan crowd—cute boys in plaid shirts and pretty girls in striped ones—gathered under the stars in the Soho Grand’s yard to watch a little movie the designer made to capture the mood of his new collection. The plot was tiny, but the feeling was distinct. S/S10 will smell like tomato leaves, sound like crickets and strumming guitars, taste like red wine, and feel like stretching on the shag carpet of your friend’s parents’ summer house. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Or, as my friend Jennifer put it, “I want that striped dress.”
