Regardless of their subject matter, Brooklyn-based illustrator Jess Rotter’s magnetic drawings lean a bit ’70s, with their curvaceous lines, statement color play and print-like patterns that create an almost psychedelic vibe. The occasional appearance of guitar playing dudes with Jim Morrison waves do their part to add to the aura too. But that’s just Jess’ artwork. It’s her Rotter and Friends limited edition t-shirt collections that pay outright homage to the era’s rare music.
The most recent, just released collection, for example, contains the Christine McVie tee, which is actually a tribute to Christine Perfect, who is actually the same person as Christine McVie. Christine Perfect was the singer’s maiden name before Fleetwood Mac and her solo album, The Legendary Christine Perfect, provided the main influence for Jess’ drawing.
Meanwhile, the Jim Sullivan tee is the result of a direct collaboration with the Sullivan family and Light in the Attic Records, who have recently reissued Sullivan’s 1969 album UFO on vinyl. While the album is in Jess’ words, “a gorgeous collection of hope jams,” the singer’s story is equally provoking: In March of 1975 while traveling from California to Tennessee, Jim Sullivan checked into a motel in Santa Rosa, NM and then disappeared, never to be seen again. Some claim that he got lost in the desert, others that he fell out of favor with a local family with alleged mafia ties, still others believe aliens abducted him. Rotter and Friends’ tee/album combo offering combines the man with the mystery.
Finally, Jess describes the subject of the third tee, Tony Joe White, as “a ’70s swamp fox, a hunk of all hunks.” Approved by Tony himself, the illustration features “highlights, or style hints of his career in that decade.” This YouTube video will provide you with a little preview.
All tees can be ordered online at Rotter and Friends.
