Karen Walker @ New York Fashion Week S/S10

Karen Walker from two points of view:

Jenni Avins:
Karen Walker’s line notes read, “A seaside holiday resort that serves as a prison for retired spies, combined with trippy ’60s psychedelia became the perfect starting point for a Karen Walker range.”

‘Sounds like the perfect starting point for a lot of things!’ I scrawled beside this sentence. So tonight I’m packing my imaginary suitcase for a hallucinatory holiday of overcast afternoons, and here’s what I’m bringing:

-Sporadically spotted t-shirt in cream, tomato and navy
-Tidy tan trousers
-Tiered kaleidoscope dress in cobalt, lime, and tangerine
-Red and silver striped cashmere and silk sweater
-Mustard-colored boat shoes
-Graphite slicker cape

Emma Barker:
Karen Walker’s collection was young, flirty, modern and as All-American as a New Zealand designer can get. Backstage, fresh faces, rosy cheeks and loose waves had everyone in a bright and sunny mood despite the dreary afternoon outside. Wearable and effortless (Hooray for the classic sundress!), Walker’s new line dressed up the dressed down. Organza ruffles peaked out from under a basic cotton frock, blouson jackets and sun hats went up instead of out. And, per Walker’s usual, the sunglasses—big and round or square and tortoise shell—did not disappoint. Post-show reflections with a friend from Jezebel can be summed up in the following:

We pledge allegiance to the navy ruffle dress of Karen Walker’s S/S10 collection. And to the boat shoes on which her models stand. One collection, under God, indivisible, with oversized sunnies for all.

YES- The seventies were great for fun fashion and it is never bad to return to that theme. We all really need to smile and have fun. YEAH for Karen Walker.
