A painting and painted Birkin bag by Claire Barrow
As I was researching London’s recent bleached hair craze and pondering a new shade of white blonde…or lavender, I stumbled upon Claire Barrow and her hand-painted leather jackets and such. Claire started painting second-hand biker jackets last fall and since then London stylists have snapped up her unique pieces. She has also been commissioned to make them for Rhianna and other musicians, though she takes custom orders from non-celebrities, too.
Adorned with edgy imagery reflecting her customers’ interests, her bold jackets, vests, bags, shoes (think creepers) and even guitars capture the individuality of the wearer via landscapes, animals, art, and much more. Having studied fashion design at the Cleveland College of Art and currently enrolled at the University of Westminster in London, Claire further infuses her illustrations with her singular vision and disparate inspirations, which she catalogs on Tumblr. She is currently on a gap year and therefore working on her coveted collection full-time. I’d say it’s about time for a one-of-a-kind or “one-off”, as the English say.
