Thursday may have marked the end of an era, as designers took their last ever bows inside the Bryant Park Tents, but it marked a new beginning for Marcella Lindeberg, who chose the final day of Fashion Week to launch her womenswear line Paris68. Named for the student and worker rebellions that shook Paris in May of 1968, the line’s title represents a fresh style and thrust towards the future. Through her sartorial creations, Lindeberg strove to uphold these sentiments.
Raised in Milan and Tuscany, the designer—who also works with her husband Johan as a creative consultant for William Rast—was inspired by the duality of the serene countryside and a stark, industrial city. This contrast materialized in a palette of greys, dusty pinks, hunter greens and metallics. Fluid blouses with editorial sleeves topped slim jodhpurs and pleated leather trousers, and sharp, cropped leather jackets were softened by delicate mohair embroidery, all of which was done by hand.
Amongst her other influences, Lindeberg cited an appreciation for the classic Parisian look. While this was evident in her structured blazers, sultry black mini dresses and intense attention to detail, something about the Swarovski pearl-embellished furs, fringed tassels and sparkly lurex ensembles screamed ragazza italiana. Quilted fencing jackets, floor-length drop-waist parkas and luxe cashmere capes were clear standouts, each piece in the line embracing the designer’s fiery, sassy spirit and epitomizing a woman’s desire to not only look but also feel powerful, luxurious and, yes, sexy.
