Your one-stop shopping experience at The Smile, the store/tattoo parlor/cafe opened in March by Carlos Quirarte and Matt Kliegman, now includes swimwear. Lingerie designer extraordinaires The Lake & Stars created two glamorous exclusives for the store’s kick-off to summer. One, the low-plunging gold number below, was captured in a Kava Gorna photograph of Harley Viera-Newton floating lifelessly across a lap pool, which was displayed across the store’s brick wall. The night of The Lake & Stars launch party, the room was lined with designers, artists and friends, all lit by the 18th century chandelier dangling at the center of the room, and—naturally—smiling with wine-stained lips.

A naïve painting of a little boy with a yellow bird perched on his finger mingles with The Classic Woman, a book published by Playboy in the 1960s that features models in Louvre-like, rather than centerfold poses. The backroom is stacked with hatboxes and lace gowns, which dangle beside a mirror. The faces of iconic woman are all around, scattered between1970s Lanvin floral peasant skirts, Zandra Rhodes pink pleated tops and endless costume jewelry.

Tucked away on 10th Street in Manhattan’s West Village, the vintage store Madame Matovu strikes the perfect balance of kitsch and class. The owner, Rosemary, calls herself a secret hippie. Always lacquered in red lipstick and adorned in a fabulous dress, she has the subtle sensibility of a tastemaker who elevates everyday dressing to an art form. She loves the ’70s and women like Charlotte Rampling, Diana Ross, Jane Birkin and Tina Turner.

And she covets old books. Two such books—those of the previously name-checked icons Diana Ross and Tina Turner—get tucked into a vintage Louis Vuitton suitcase and brought with her whenever she travels; they’re her inspirations, her favorite divas. Stop by when Rosemary’s in town and the store is open, and she’ll let you leaf through them.

Lorick’s Fall 2009 print campaign is a trip to Hitchcock Lady Land, where Abigail Lorick (the line’s designer and the ghost designer for Eleanor Waldorf on “Gossip Girl”) combined the prim elegance and horror of “Vertigo” with French New Wave filtered Americana. Produced in collaboration with art director Roanne Adams and photographer Tom Hines, the resulting images are disturbingly coy.

Cinema nerds and TV junkies will be delighted by the return of a Laura Palmer and Tippy Hedrin-esque style to primetime—via Gossip Girl—and all will be captivated by this heroine-down-for-the-count photo shoot.

The serendipitous start of the jewelry line SAMMA is as unusual and memorable as the line itself—it began with a robbery. When artist Hanna Sandin’s apartment was burgled and all her valuables and jewelry were stolen, she began stringing materials from her studio around her neck as a method of temporary adornment. The casual operation underwent an alchemical shift of Rumpelstiltskin straw-into-gold proportions, and her makeshift necklaces became beautiful jewelry that is both elegant and slightly offbeat.

Ms. Sandin, whose collection is available at Mc & Co in Williamsburg, has the mesmerizing ability to take the most banal object and give it a sense of worth by allowing its inherent beauty to shine through. An elegant woman of Swedish decent—and a familiar face among art and fashion circles—the six-foot-tall designer is rarely seen without one of her creations around her neck. Moreover, the collection of ropes and triangles, chains and knots seem a natural, wearable extension of the mobiles and sculptures she creates: a harmonious sing-song of complementary fragments.
