There is a striking and balanced simplicity at work in this video. As a small airplane descends from the sky onto a rural airstrip, the cinematic tones of M83’s “Coloring the Void” builds into a harmonious crescendo of layered sonic textures. The aural pathos builds with each downward tick of the altimeter, bringing the passenger ever closer to home. And while it is unclear whether the creator intentionally induced this audio/visual asymmetry, the effect is undoubtedly gorgeous.
The song, which unfortunately gets cut off at the end of the video, is from M83’s Digital Shades Vol. 1 – a collection of lush electronic landscapes composed by frontman Anthony Gonzalez. The record is clearly inspired by, if not a direct descendant of, the ambient work of Brian Eno on Music for Airports and others. It is a beautiful listen and one that is certainly intended for a deep, inward-turning headphone session.
