Melanie Bonajo was born in Heerlen, Netherlands in 1978. She works as an artist, performing and exhibiting her photographs in art institutions such as Institute Neérlandais/Paris, Kruller Muller Museum/De Hoge Veluwe, SMBA/Amsterdam, Fons Welters/Amsterdam, Foam /Amsterdam, Fette Gallery/Los Angeles, Mad Vicky Tea Gallery/ Paris.  In May 2009 she will have two solo shows in New York City, at Ppow Gallery and Capricious Space. In addition to numerous exhibition catalogues, she will release a book showcasing a retrospective of her work will be published in April 2009 by Capricious publishing. She is winner of the Dutch Young Artist Award 2003 and in collaboration with Kinga Kielczynska winner of the book price Pup Award 2007. Her work has been published in Capricious, Eye-magazine, Glu, Livraison, Famous magazine, Mollusk and many more. She is currently doing a studio program at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
