New York-based painter Halsey Hathaway currently has a show up at StoreFront Bushwick. Through a process of painting and staining he creates veils of color and shapes floating and overlapping. Transitions between colors can sometimes pack a punch and at other times be a quiet close up whisper.

Anastasia Taylor-Lind is an English photojournalist who is based in the Middle East. These photos are from a series called No Friend But the Mountains, photographs of women guerilla fighters with the PKK, or Kurdistan Workers Party, on the border of Iraq and Turkey.

German painter Neo Rauch’s current show at David Zwirner titled Heilstätten,  roughly translates to “a place of healing”. At the center of the show stands a bronze Athena-like figure, arm outstretched, carrying an owl, chest eerily buldging with the heads of men. The same woman, painted as a fountain at the center of a town square, is hidden in a much larger painting,  easily overlooked in the complex mapping of ochre walls, lavender coated men collapsing, and towering trees. The woman-with-owl motif presents itself a third time in one of the show’s largest painting titled Aprilnacht or April Night, where two figures, one male, one female, both hold and examine large ominous birds. Only his is a fragment, a lone head; hers is complete. Her hand, clothed in a green sleeve, five fingers outstretched with the quiet command with which a mother would hold a baby, is placed, curiously, at the dead center of the painting. Heilstätten will be on view until December 17 at David Zwirner Gallery, 525 W. 19 St., NYC.

Media mogul Daniel Filipacchi created LUI in 1963 as a French version of Playboy. Looking back at the early covers before the magazine went on a long decline, turning rather hard core pornographic, they have such a sense of playful creativity with amazing typography, graphic design and beauties like Claudia Cardinale, Jane Fonda and most amazingly- Grace Jones as a chocolate bar.

These are photos of Italian female truck drivers that founded an advocacy group called Lady Trucks to promote equal rights among truck drivers. Samantha Casolari is an Italian photographer living and working in Brooklyn.

Peter Sutherland has curated an online gallery called Smoke Bath, centered around images of camping and the outdoors. The idea is to create an exhibition that makes people think about the value of spending time in nature, and hopefully raise money and awareness about The Fresh Air Fund, an independent not-for-profit that provides free summer vacations to low income New York City kids. A benefit exhibition opens Friday, April 23, at Capricious, with work by photographers Andrew Laumann and Nicholas Gotlund. The online gallery, with images from many photographers, ranging from Alec Soth to Richard Prince to Capricious curator Sophie Morner to yours truly, can be viewed indefinitely.
