Andrew Guenther is an American artist who lives in New York. Born and raised in Wheaton, Illinois, his work deals with the concepts of the evolution of the self, life and spirituality, and  the evolution of culture. Guenther’s work will appear in a group show entitled MIE: A Portrait by 35 Artists at Freight and Volume, curated by Nick Lawrence and Mie Iwatsuki. The opening will be on Saturday, January 21 from 6 – 8 p.m.

The Poetry Club Art Space is a new underground gallery in the basement of a Bed-Stuy apartment, open to all mediums of art, performance, music, and catering specifically to young and emerging artists. Curated by Melissa Godoy Nieto, in collaboration with María J. Baez and Liliana Zúñiga from Mexico City, their current exhibition, No Sombrero, focuses on the interplay between embracing Mexican culture and the pursuit of contemporary life. All the works all use a Jacob’s ladder toy, commonplace in Mexican households, as their canvas and are all functional. A selection of the 70 works on view are shown here.

Kylie Lockwood, a Detroit and New York based artist, incites a re-imagining of the body, forms from the domestic interior world both past and present, and nature through her powerful and quite often poetic combination of material choices and objects. Whether it’s her sculptures, drawings, or photographs she brings us back to a world of the senses, lovingly brought to life through her hands.

Self Reflections: The Expressionist Origins of Lisette Model opened yesterday at Bruce Silverstein Gallery, 535 W. 24 St., NYC. The show features the photographs of master portrait photographer Lisette Model alongside some of the great (and my favorite) European Expressionist such as Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, George Grosz, Jeanne Mammen, and Lyonel Feininger. The show will be on view through November 12.

Z Behl is a 25-year-old artist from New York working in Brooklyn. She makes drawings that wish they were paintings, paintings that wish they were sculptures, and most recently sculptures that wish they were people. This wooden army is her most recent installation, last seen at Bluxome Point in San Francisco.

Paz Bonfil is a artist and DJ who lives in Tel Aviv.

Whorescope is a series of twelve drawings by Caris Reid. The project is titled after Samuel Beckett’s poem of the same name, and channels the sexual energy of the twelve astrological signs of the Zodiac, one drawing for each. Shown here, from top to bottom, are Scorpio, Pisces, Aquarius, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, and Libra.

Alex Massouras is a London-based artist who has a solo show up at Skylight Projects in New York through May 2nd. The show is 18 drawings, each created using colored-pencil shavings. The paper used for each drawing comes from an old composition notebook found by the artist on the streets of Paris and all of the frames are hand made by the artist himself.

These pieces by Jean-Sébastien Furer are currently on view at Saks Gallery in Geneva as part of the exhibition Under Construction. The show, which runs through March 12, also features works by Laurent Kropf, Oscar Tuazon, Olympia Scarry and Sara VanDerBeek.

Lee Godie was a Chicago based outsider artist, who spent much of her adult life homeless, selling her paintings in front of the Art Institute of Chicago for $5 or $100, depending on her mood.  Now her paintings can be found at auction houses, selling for thousands of dollars.
