The Poetry Club Art Space is a new underground gallery in the basement of a Bed-Stuy apartment, open to all mediums of art, performance, music, and catering specifically to young and emerging artists. Curated by Melissa Godoy Nieto, in collaboration with María J. Baez and Liliana Zúñiga from Mexico City, their current exhibition, No Sombrero, focuses on the interplay between embracing Mexican culture and the pursuit of contemporary life. All the works all use a Jacob’s ladder toy, commonplace in Mexican households, as their canvas and are all functional. A selection of the 70 works on view are shown here.

New York based painter Jay Gaskill creates wildly hypnotic paintings that bring together abstraction, pop culture, and design. By combining colors that are harmonious or perfectly ill-fitting, his pristine paint handling allow the images to keep you moving through them at multitude of speeds, triggering emotional associations or sonic echoes. He will be exhibiting at Hunter College’s Times Square Gallery as part of the Fall 2011 Thesis Exhibition.

Ayala Serfaty is an Israeli designer. Her intricate and beautiful creations are as much scientific as they are artistic, and utilize the most advanced green and sustainable technology. A selection of her light sculptures and her new furniture line are on display at the Cristina Grajales Gallery, 10 Greene St., NYC, through December 23.

In 1973, Vico Magistretti designed the Locanda dell’Angelo in Ameglia, Italy “as a mirror reflecting the white of the Apuan Alps and the blue of the Ligurian Sea.” Every detail of the hotel, including the seating, lighting and logo, was designed by Magistretti to create a curated experience. In this refined, asymmetrical structure, Magistretti seamlessly blends the modernist influences of Frank Lloyd Wright and le Corbusier with traditional Italian agrarian architecture. New York artist Matthew Spiegelman honors Magistretti’s design in a series of photographs which focus on the graceful and inventive lighting fixtures used throughout the hotel.

Stephen Kaltenbach: slantstep 2, (now on view at Specific Object/David Platzker in NYC through Friday, June 10) celebrates slantstep 2, 1969, a multiple by Stephen Kaltenbach designed by William Plumb. Slantstep 2 is a molded fiberglass reinterpretation of the original Slant Step, discovered in the Mount Carmel Salvage Shop in Mill Valley, California in 1965 by William T. Wiley and Bruce Nauman. The mysterious object became an iconic inspiration, a muse for Bay Area artists resulting in Slant Step-themed artworks, exhibitions, books, and the slantstep 2.

Christa Joo Hyun D’Angelo is a Korean-Italian-American artist who currently divides her time between Berlin and NYC .

Jandek is a group of musicians who have been active under the alias since the late 1970’s. They have self-released over sixty albums. This is a small selection of cover images.

Julius Shulman (1910- 2009) is one of the best known American architectural photographers who focused mainly on modern homes built in the 1950’s.

I know most people do spring cleaning, but I always find winter, when you’re trapped inside, a nice time to clear away some wreckage. Looking for some inspiration, I found these images on the design website 2thewalls from Terence Conran’s 1994 version of The House Book, a seminal classic on interior design first published in the 70’s.
