Each Friday, Dossier will bring you knowledgeable style commentary, context and inspiration — a roundup of the week’s best style coverage — in no particular order.
1. If Enzo Mari’s not on your radar, he should be. Aside from possessing an amusing penchant for bad behavior, the Italian artist/designer (and dear God don’t try to label him as just one) remains — after more than 40 years — an influential leader in his field. Here, the always engaging Alice Rawsthorn highlights his epic contributions while reminding us that insults and tantrums aren’t limited to photo shoots.
2. Even in my most cynical and uninspired moments, I’m a sucker for Nick Knight. His speed-of-light innovation in the often blasé bubble of high fashion never ceases to amaze. The opener to his recent Fantasia project, “There is no excellent beauty that hath not some strangeness in the proportion,” had me at “Th…”.
3. Dream a little dream about an acorn-shaped treehouse nestled in a sunny valley in Ukiah, California. If this conjures images of carefree Kerouac days, well then, I like you. In my world, true style mandates at least a touch of free spirit — T magazine seems to agree.
4. Aside from the extreme measures taken to uncover Karl Lagerfeld’s diet, investigative journalism in the fashion industry is slim to nil. This article exploring the magazine ruse behind ubiquitous “Price upon Request” disclaimers is about as close to undercover as we get.
5. With Dossier boasting a French-American pedigree, you can understand why the Museum of New York’s “Paris/New York: Design Fashion Culture, 1925 to 1940” exhibition, exploring our cultural love affair with Poiret, champagne and Art Deco, would appeal. Check out the Wall Street Journal’s more than adequate teaser.
