Distracted, hyperactive, impulsive — symptoms of the average New Yorker, right? It’s also a list symptoms of A.D.D., which happens to be my new favorite clothing line in Berlin. And now that the coveted line will make its NY debut this fall at Still Life, you, too, can have A.D.D.
I came across the line accidentally. The weather in Berlin can go from balmy to frigid in the course of an afternoon, so a friend pointed me toward Berlin’s “Temporary Showroom,” where, among other things, I found an A.D.D. bomber jacket: blue plaid, with mismatched fabric on the backside serving as a subtle nod to punk.
A.D.D. has a cult following in Berlin among the art and fashion crowds (and counts myself as its most recent inductee: I’ve worn my A.D.D. jacket nearly every day for two months).
Creator Wibke Deertz says her creative process is “born out of chaos” — yet the unisex line is remarkably reduced and focused, consisting mainly of plaid shirts with contrasting collars, grandpa sweaters and austere hooded jackets. And did I mention it’s totally rad?
Since A.D.D.’s debut in 2000, Deertz’ approach has been collaborative, with contributions by artists like Hannes Schmidt and photographer David Fischer, and other friends who regularly add suggestions to the line’s “wish list.” (I should also mention that Luis Berrios Negron, whom I wrote about last week, happened to be wearing an A.D.D. shirt the day of our visit.)
Perhaps this September as you’re jumping frantically between blogs, office work and emails, you might decide that what you need isn’t Ritalin, it’s just some clean German fashion.
