Seth Fluker is a young Canadian photographer currently based in the UK. He has an eye for beauty in some of the most unforeseen places and is pleased to present his new project Schnauzer Publications. The first title is called “Before Things Change”, which is a series of photographs taken in 2009 while working as a kitchen porter in London. To celebrate the first release, Donlon Books (London) will be hosting a book launch and discussion between Fluker and Eleanor Vonne Brown on January 22, 2010 from 6 – 9 PM.
So Seth! Why focus in so close when photographing?
For this series, I wanted the viewer to use their imagination and come up with their own conclusions of what the photographs could be or how they were created, so from the beginning I decided not to expose the sinks structure or it’s surroundings.
Do you feel the sensation of space when taking the photographs or are you trying to create that for the viewer of your work?
In the beginning I was mesmerized by the colors and patterns, overtime it became clear that a few of the photographs looked like they were taken in outer space or vice versa and that led me to diluting lighter liquids within heavier substances which created the two photographs in the fold out.
Who and what is your inspiration?
I’m inspired by so many different things, right now I’m really into Hackney Flowers by Stephen Gill, Half Awake & Half Asleep in the Water by Asako Narahashi, Overpainted Photographs by Gerhard Richter, everything by Wolfgang Tillmans and Cy Twombly, the album Songs About Dancing and Drugs by Circlesquare and of course my family and friends.
Whats your next book going to be?
Nothing is planned but I would like to release another title by summer 2010.
