So far in the new year I haven’t ventured out at night once: the result of a combination of bitter temperatures and resolutions to work more and play less. However, tonight I plan on changing my hermetic ways to attend Peter Doig’s first solo show in the US in 10 years. His atmospheric paintings are part of a traveling exhibition — the most extensive showing of his work to date — presented in New York both at Gavin Brown’s enterprise and Michael Werner Gallery.
And somehow, despite the prestige of a cross-continental exhibition and a reputation as one of the most influential painters of his generation, Doig hasn’t lost his sense of whimsy. The spotlighted image for tonight’s exhibition is titled “Man Dressed As Bat.” Since I will be dressed like a bag lady to fend off the cold, I’m sure I will feel right at home. See you there.

The rhetoric of Peter Doig does not mean that the his art really made us artists.
