Nash Ambassador: The Car of the Future

There’s an article in the Times today about the 1950 Nash Ambassador owned by radio host Rich Conaty. He says that all the cars in the Superman tv show were Nashes: the police in Gotham drove the car he has, Lois Lane had a Nash Rambler (my mom also had one in the 60′s that was handpainted with psychedelic swirls), and Clark Kent drove a Nash-Healey sports car. The 1950 Rambler was dubbed the “car of the future” when it came out, with features such as sunken wheels for aerodynamics, a sliding panel to hide the am radio, and back seats that convert to a full bed for camping. Why have cars gotten so ugly? Is it a safety thing? Is it because a car that looked like this would be too expensive to make? I really can’t imagine any everyday cars of today that people will still want to be driving in 2070. Photo by Tony Cenicola for The New York Times. For additional images, click “Read More.”

Rich is absolutely right. I own a 1949 Nash Ambassador and drive it regularly. I also own a 1952 and a 1954 Ambassador and take them to events and shows. They always get attention and draw a crowd. The best place I found for rubber, parts and even a well restored or original Nash or two for sale is NashRamblerRubber.com
The Nash is a solid very comfortable driver, and a real representation of American history. Great cars. They were built from 1902 thru 1957 with over a million manufactured and sold.
Great car. Thanks for featuring it in the blog.
