A mysterious new magazine called Monika appeared last week in London’s bookshops. What makes Monika so out of the ordinary is that it has been released anonymously. Published with no masthead or physical contract address, and with the byline following every article or spread simply stating “M.”, there is no indication of who is behind it, or even where it is from, although one can guess somewhere in the UK based on the advertisements. The content of the magazine – engaging essays, short stories, and photography packaged in a handsome design – may not seem so unconventional per se, but the fact that everything has been done anonymously has, according to the issue’s editorial, given the contributers the ability to take risks they might not otherwise. It also asks something different of the reader. The theme of the first issue is anonymity and Dossier will be featuring two texts from the publication in the Read section in the next week. The first piece, “A Brief Autobiography of Joe Bloggs or the Unfortunate Rise of the Cult of the Individual”, is up now. For more information about Monika, or to order copies of the magazine, visit their website.
