I definitely have moments when I feel hopeless about the state of the world and the people in it. Today, for example. It was freezing all summer and now it’s almost October and it’s 82 degrees, New York is filled with half-built, nasty-ass skyscrapers which, if they’re ever finished, are going to be filled with people I don’t want for neighbors, Americans are fighting tooth and nail to keep themselves from having the right to even basic healthcare. Awesome.
So, feeling as positive as I clearly am, it’s really nice to be reminded that things can – and do – change for the better. The NY Times ran a preview of their upcoming Sunday magazine today about kids coming out in middle school in the mid-west and … being accepted for who they are. Some of their parents, instead of throwing them out and sending them to reprogramming camps, actually take them to gay dances and Gay Pride. Even their dads. That’s the gist of the article, but I definitely recommend reading it. It made me feel like maybe the people in this world aren’t all so bad.
