The Flow and Tide of Commune Design

Originally intended as a kind of pop-up-shop assemblage of graphic artists and architects, gathering together on a job to job basis, Commune has followed is own innate rhythms to become one of the hippest and most respected design firms working today.  Their top-to-bottom build-out and decor of the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs was among [...]

Insp.

The proliferation of image blogs powered by the tumblr platform raises the interesting question of how the internet as a structured society of individuals can collectively produce a homeopathic response to itself. The relationship between the particular nature of the way information is disseminated online and our diminishing attention spans  has become frequently remarked upon [...]

“I refuse to see Titanic, ever!”

I am regrettably more of a casual movie fan than I would like to admit. I often watch films months after the hype has worn down, not as some sort of statement, but because of my inherent laziness to actually go to the physical theater itself. Yet, despite being a casual fan of the cinematic [...]

Dock Ellis & The LSD No-No by James Blagden

In 1970 Dock Ellis, who passed away last December, pitched a no hitter for the Pittsburgh Pirates while on acid.  For part of the game he was convinced Nixon was the umpire and occasionally that Jimi Hendrix was at the plate.  No Mas presents James Blagden’s Dock Ellis & The LSD No-No.

My Parents Were Awesome

Heartwarming website of the day: My Parents Were Awesome.  When I go home for the holidays I’m going to do my best to find a suitable photo of Jane and Jeff. Thanks to Erika Wall.

Gothenburg-based label Sincerely Yours has just added two beautiful works to their site.  The first is a new video for the mysterious band jj directed by Marcus Söderlund (interviewed by Dossier a month ago).  The second is a remix of Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane by Salem, who I enthused about here a few months ago.

Lightspeed Champion Watches the Worst Movies of All Time

Throughout my adolescence I maintained that the worst movie I ever saw in the theaters was The Big Blue, which my mother made me see with her when I was eight. Today I realize that I wasn’t old enough to appreciate Luc Besson’s erotic (I remember it being erotic) tale of the rivalry between two free divers [...]

Zizek in today’s NY Times

There is an op-ed in today’s NY Times by Slavoj Zizek on the anniversary of the Berlin Wall entitled “20 Years of Collapse”. Zizek’s choice of Victor Kravchenko as emblem for our current cultural-political stasis is quiet bleak but his life story does seem to embody a certain zeitgeist. To crudely summarize a life: sickened [...]

This Long Century has been steadily updating their collection of personal and poetic contributions from a wide variety of cultural producers “considered outstanding within their field of work.”  A collaboration between Georgina Lim, Stefan Pietsch, Jason Evans and Kate Sennert, the site now features forty contributers.  A recent update includes work by Alec Soth (pictured), Erik Parker, Don Bachardy and many [...]

Adam Curtis’ The Medium and the Message Blog

I don’t know what Adam Curtis transatlantic reputation stands at, my guess is rather low. I remember sending a copy of The Power Of Nightmares to an American cousin of mine, only to have it dismissed as inferior to Loose Change. Nevertheless, Curtis stands alongside someone like David Simon as a great reluctant reactionary, an [...]
