‘Summer Reading’ at Capricious

Capricious is legendary for its publishing prowess: From Capricious Magazine, to Girls Like Us and Can’t Be Famous magazines, they’ve created a publishing mini-empire. Now they’ve transformed their gallery-fronted office space at 103 Broadway (between Bedford and Berry) in Williamsburg into a sun-drenched library, with an exhibition called “Summer Reading.” On view until September 21st, the showcase features one-of-a-kind and limited edition photo-based artists’ books and journals from over 50 international artists.

Billing itself as “a haven for reading, reflection and retreat from reality,” Capricious headquarters is now a warm spot to sit, absorb and reflect. Hand-sewn, one-off editions, Xeroxed zines, scrolls in jars and hardcover masterpieces from artists and photographers line the tables and shelves.

You’re encouraged to waste a few hours here and won’t feel rushed around, nor will you be pressed to buy something (from what I could gather, nothing was for sale). You will be left alone to your own devices, allowed to roam free and take in the books, the plants and the end of summer at your own pace.

Capricious is open Wednesday to Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.
