You may have been inside watching the Olympics this past week, or you might have been among the hundreds of thousands of fans that descended upon Huntington Beach for the Nike U.S. Open of Surfing. Considering surfing is still not an Olympic sport and most of the competitions happen in pretty remote places, the Open is a great place to watch the world’s top 100 or so surfers (like the infamous Kelly Slater) do their thing in sunny Southern California. In addition to surfing, the Open includes the world’s best skateboarders and BMX bikers – again, not Olympic sports yet either (we will wait patiently for rock-climbing to join the list someday as well). Until then, we are going to chill on the gymnastics for just a minute and give these sports some love. In case you missed it, all of the action is available to stream on Nike’s Surf Open Website. Also, starting this week, check out Boardmasters in England or the very awesome, Supergirl Pro, an all-girl competition of surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding. Here, photographer Doug Neill shares some images from his week of sand and surf, including shots of the Open’s title winners Julian Wilson and Lakey Peterson.
