Nicole Simone

On a recent rainy evening in the basement of the Ace Hotel I was transported back through the decades. LA based singer Nicole Simone’s first ever NYC performance made me feel like I had stumbled across an underground nightclub in the 40’s with dark banquettes and cigarette girls pushing packs of Lucky Strike. Simone has that effect- evoking a startlingly nostalgic and sensuous sound with her moody and engrossing vocals. Backed by Kelly Pratt and Jon Natchez (of Arcade Fire and Beirut, respectively) who added a compliment of horns and mandolin, Simone’s sweet-as-pie demeanor was the icing on the cake. Her recent self-released debut EP features Bored to Death‘s Jason Schwartzman on drums and banjo. Let’s hope she makes her way back to the east coast soon so we can all experience a little time travel.
