In case you’ve been meaning to do something about global warming, but just aren’t the motivated type, here’s a socially-conscious event that’s perfect for even the slackest among us: Blackout Sabbath, this Saturday (Summer Solstice) 21st of June 2008, from noon-midnight.
The brainchild of category-defying music icon Rufus Wainwright and his life accomplice, Jörn Weisbrodt, the concept is simplicity itself: spend the longest day of the year doing nothing requiring electricity. Troll your internal archive for fond memories of how you weathered blackouts (both literal and figurative) past. Have a theme party where everyone you know brings their own beef (grilling is ok!) and war stories from the big Blackout of 2003, or (if you run with a really lawless crowd) organize a rowdy game of Hide-and-Go-Seek in the dark. Tell ghost stories! Serenade that special someone a capella or acoustically. Light candles and reflect on how many of your modern conveniences you can afford to do without on a daily basis. Brave an air conditioning-free yoga practice in Union Square if you dare. More info on that specific activity below:
