As many of you know, the Far Rockaways have been wrecked: entire families have lost their homes, business have been torn away and the whole boardwalk literally ripped off. The situation is desperate but nevertheless being somewhat ignored by mainstream media, so people are working at the grass roots to help all the families and businesses of the area who have been destroyed by Sandy. This email came in from Giovanna Maselli and Samantha Casolari, who were up all last night collecting donated supplies to bring to the Rockaways:
Please contribute whatever you can by bringing the following desperately needed supplies to Beach 113 & Rockaway Beach Blvd. They are being re-distributed down the peninsula from there. The residents of NYCHA housing out there who have no electricity or food. If you can’t make it to the Rockaways, you can make a donation here.
Anything can help but especially:
* battery operated light devices
* Propane grille or camping style oven
* cleaning supplies – buckets, squeegies, mops, bleach
* masks, gloves for cleaning
* garbage bags
In addition to the staples (food, clothing, water, blankets, batteries, formula, diapers, wipes, etc.) we are hearing that people are also in need of heavy duty garbage bags, shovels and gloves for the clean up efforts. Generators and pumps are also in short supply so if anyone has access to any (or knows someone who does) people could really use the help getting rid of the water.
